Why Be Normal !

The older I get, the less appealing  “Normal”  has become to me. It’s not just the job I do or that I live in Portland, where the town moto is……..

stickersand for fans of Portlandia , those places really do exist, where in the spring one of the largest gatherings(8-10,000) of the World Naked Bike  ride through the streets of downtown Portland. For me it’s just “Why Be Normal”. For the millions of people that grew up in a  traditional home, where people seemed to be encouraged to “keep up with the Jones” and achieve society’s standards (WTF!) the house, the car, the job, the children and the perfect marriage ( gag!). None of these things mean shit!  if we can’t celebrate your uniqueness, rejoice in the fact that I’m not you and your not me.

Call me ODD, but I am fascinated in what makes other people tick, one might call me a coinsurer of odd, and in particular the kids that I work with and by the way some of them actually have twitches (ticks). Keep in mind most of them aren’t interested in what makes other people tick, (on par with most kids their ages). What they are is, smart, funny, compassionate and completely self absorbed and I love to find ways to connect with them, sometimes its a real challenge, but I never take it personally. Maybe their ignoring me, because they just don’t like me, but most likely its because, it takes a lot of energy for them to interact with people and before they put out the effort, they have to feel someones worth it.

So instead of thinking, someone’s weird, try not imposing your ideals on others and ( as long as their not harming anyone) be grateful for the worlds diversity! Anybody else feel that way?

Pinball Wizard

One of the ironies of my profession (the short bus) is that some of the people that are the least tolerant of autistic  behaviors are, other people with autism!

So picture this! A Priest, a Rabi and a Parrot walk into a bar……..  opps! how about this, a metal box with wheels and windows and a loud diesel engine, throw in (literally!) a half dozen or so kids with various degrees of disabilities, it’s the end of their day, they’re tired and overstimulated. So if you don’t visualize me being at the wheel of a rolling pinball machine, trying desperately to keep it from going TILT! I can’t help you!

school bus

Now lets look at the heart of the matter. The basics of my job are…… to transport students to and from school in a safe and efficient manner . But as I see it I have a much greater obligation to these kids and their families, as one human being to another. They can’t help who they are and the very smallest amount of compassion and understanding go a long, long way. These kids aren’t looking for pity and sometimes I just have to laugh at the situation,( because quite frankly it can be pretty *#@!+*^# funny) and I’m not laughing at them EVER. Amazingly they join in and we have a great time.

The Folds of My Brain

As I am now past the double nickel (55), I sometimes worry about my memory  and then… I heard a Neurologist  say, Not to worry about forgetting the small stuff ( like did I flush the toilet?, where are my keys, that sort of crap). That as you age, your brain becomes filled with so much high value information, that the brain can’t be bothered with trivial things.

So you mean I’m not spacey! I’m just intellectually overloaded. I like that guy, I would quote him, but I forgot his name or where I read it, maybe I saw it on TV. I am reasonably sure it was a man. Sounds like something a MAN would say.

WOW! I just had an epiphany I”M A FUCKING GENIUS!!!!!!

“oh Bus Driver”

Lets start this meeting with an introduction”Hello my name is Peggy and I’m a Bus Driver”. My friends tell I need a name tag that says Hello I’m Inappropriate, but you’ll find that out soon enough.

Being asked “what do you do” has always been a cringe worthy moment for me. Not because I don’t like what I do, but because bus driver isn’t one of those illustrious titles that generates expressions of awe and wonder. The visual most people get is…..Honey BooBoo learns to drive.

After nearly 30yrs behind the wheel, its time for me to say it Loud, say it Proud. “I am a Bus Driver!” I’m also so much more, but lets start with that. Continue reading “oh Bus Driver”
